Snoring, sleep apnoea or similar conditions can inhibit the body from falling into a deep sleep, this can cause a patient to have chronic fatigue and more seriously, can increase a patient’s risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The OrthoApnea is an intraoral device, which is custom-made to each individual patient; the device is similar to a retainer for the upper and lower arch, which is attached by two splints and a screw in the middle. It allows controlled but the comfortable advancement of the mandible, retaining the muscular tone around the airway. This prevents restriction to the airway during sleep, eliminating snoring and reducing symptoms of sleep apnoea.
This can dramatically improve the patient’s sleep and therefore health and wellbeing.

OrthoApnea modifies the permeability of the upper airway during sleep enhanced by the expansion of the size and/or decreased collapsibility (e.g., it improves the muscle tone of the upper airway). OrthoApnea has demonstrated the ability to extend the UA at various points, both on the soft palate and the base of the tongue. There is a predominant lateral expansion of the UA, but expansion has also been observed in the front-to-back region. Thus, the tongue makes more space and moves forward. Pharyngeal collapse disappears and the critical pressure decreases.

For this intraoral device, a patient has to be diagnosed with sleep apnoea or associated symptoms (provided by a sleep analysis). Sleep analysis equipment such as the RUsleeping RTS can be provided by Brighton dental labs. The orthopnea device can be made in as little as 48 hours in our laboratories.
